Microgrids for Energy Resilience: A Guide to Conceptual
Department of Defense Instruction 4170.111 requires installations to be more energy resilient, and as a result, many installations are pursuing microgrids to meet their
Microgrid energy planning has gained considerable attention in the scientific community and among power system stakeholders due to its potential beneficial impacts on efficiency, emissions, and carbon footprint reduction. It is a crucial element in the design of sustainable energy infrastructures .
For example, a 100% renewable building-level microgrid at Miramar was built and tested.18 As the costs of renewable energy and energy storage decrease and microgrid technology matures, we could see future installations of microgrids with high levels of renewable energy.
Many locations also have renewable energy generation sources such as PV panels or wind turbines that provide variable power output. These can be good resources to add into a microgrid to improve the ability to sustain long outages, as they do not depend on fuel deliveries and they increase the overall sustainability of the system.
Research in this area could provide opportunities for microgrid planning and energy management optimization. Also, upcoming works could address multi-objective optimization, including cost minimization, CO 2 emission reduction, and autonomy. Advanced multi-objective energy management techniques could significantly improve energy planning.
